The project goal is to promote the conservation of the Dry Forests by increasing its resilience of the effects of Climate Change while ensuring the preservation of the genetic diversity of the floral biodiversity in the PBPA.
Upgrade the existing Plant Conservation Nursery with equipment and personnel to produce seedlings for the three areas of operations. These areas are 1. Provide seedlings to be used in direct restoration in the Dry Forests, 2. Provide seedling of vulnerable plants to be given to select members of the CGP group that can provide a suitable place to plant and support vulnerable and endemic species, 3. Provide seedlings which will be sold to visitors at the PBDC, local nursery operators or landscapers and the general public. By the end of this project these funds will provide an income source for C-CAM to continue to support these activities beyond this project.
C-CAM has compiled a list of 50 plant species (attached along with this proposal) that have been recommended by consultants and other nursery managers as good candidates for propagation. Based on the availability of planting materials including seeds or cuttings of these species and the germination success we will produce at least 500 seedlings from at least 10 of these plant species initially
