Journey on a boardwalk through the heart of the mangroves. Hear the sound and see the sights as we move along the Salt River. The tour is an intimate experience where one can hear and see birds and other wildlife, and enjoy local stories from the tour guides.
Portland Bight Discovery Centre offers an interactive tour guided by locals through the
wetlands of Salt River. This includes viewing interpretative displays, gift and snack shop,
audio visual room and a look-out tower to view wildlife using binoculars. A dry forest
nursery with a forest interpretation space, river turtle pond with interpretive material, a
dipping pond for kids, a gazebo which offers a place for snacking/events or just resting. A
walk along a 130 ft boardwalk through the wetlands to a nearby bird hide overlooking a
pond which has mangrove trees, birds, ducks and crocodiles among other wildlife. There
will also be a ½ hour up the river on a barge powered by an electric engine which will allow
guests to enjoy the sounds of nature and the majesty of the mangrove forests and the clear
water of the river and wildlife (crabs, fish and possibly crocodiles).
